What is Neuropsychology?

The area of neuropsychology is a sub-specialty in the field of psychology that is focused on the relationship between how our brains function and how we behave in our day-to-day lives. A neuropsychological assessment is a formal way of examining various thinking skills, such as attention, language, memory, and executive function skills, as well as abilities related to emotion and behavior, in order to better understand the brain development of your child or adolescent.

What is Assessed?

In general, a neuropsychological evaluation will assess a variety of areas, and may include:

● Intellectual functioning (IQ)

● Neurocognitive skills

● Academic abilities

● Behavioral and mood functioning

What will the results tell me?

By comparing your  test scores to the scores of others of similar ages and backgrounds, we create a profile of your  strengths and weaknesses. The results of a neuropsychological evaluation help those who are involved in your care in a number of ways, depending on the reasons that brought you to our office.

What can I expect during the evaluation?

Clinical Interview. We will typically start with an interview with parents/guardians or other caregivers to learn about your  history (developmental, medical, educational, etc.).

Questionnaires. We will also ask you to fill out several questionnaires about development, behavior and emotions, and academic performance.

Testing. This “testing” is interactive in nature, as you will be working one-on-one with our trained and experienced examiners; testing typically involves paper and pencil as well as hands-on activities (e.g., puzzles, brain teasers), in addition to one or two computerized tasks.

● Depending on what’s bringing you and your child to our office, completing the testing may take anywhere from 3-9 hours. We usually recommend breaking the testing up into smaller “chunks” (e.g., 2-3 hours) across several appointments in order to not overly tire the patient.

Feedback Session. Once all testing has been completed and we have received all of the questionnaires from you, we will write up a comprehensive report detailing the relevant background information that you have shared about your child or teen, their testing results, any applicable diagnoses, and an outline of next steps for them. We will discuss the ins and outs of this report with you during a final appointment (called a feedback session) and will provide you with a copy of the report for your records.
